Westpac Restorations pioneered the digitizing and use of archive microfilm in the warbird restoration industry.
When we first researched the possibility of digitizing microfilm back in 1999 the only commercially available option was to have the film hi-speed captured in bitonal (B&W) images. While this option might have worked for top quality film, that was not an option for us in the aircraft restoration field. Usually the only available microfilm was less than perfect and the loss of vital detail was not an option. So we developed a system where we had a human operator manually digitize the microfilm in grayscale. This allowed us to capture the best possible image and preserve all available data. The result is one of the best digital libraries of warbird microfilm available today.
